Hypercalcemia of malignancy: Part I.

چکیده
Digital Object Identifier: 10.1188/04.CJON.209-210 Hypercalcemia is a metabolic condition that occurs when the serum calcium level rises above the normal range of 9–11 mg/dl (Myers, 2001; Smith, 2000). It is a complex metabolic oncologic emergency that can be life threatening. This column is the first of a two-part series about hypercalcemia of malignancy (HCM). Part I focuses on the pathophysiologic mechanisms of hypercalcemia and includes questions about calculating the corrected serum calcium level based on the patient’s serum albumin level. Part II, which will be published in the June 2004 issue, will focus on patient assessment, management, and nursing implications of HCM.

Malignancy-Induced Hypercalcemia—Diagnostic Challenges
Hypercalcemia in children is a rare metabolic finding. The clinical picture is usually non-specific, and the etiology includes several entities (metabolic, nutritional, drug-induced, inflammatory, cancer-associated, or genetic) depending on the age at presentation, but severe hypercalcemia is associated mainly with malignancy in childhood and sepsis in neonates. Severe parathyroid hormone (PTH)...
متن کاملCirculating parathyroid hormone-related protein (109-141) in malignancy-associated hypercalcemia.
For differential diagnosis between hypercalcemia-induced bone metastasis and humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy (HHM), serum parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) concentrations were measured in normal subjects and patients with malignancy-associated hypercalcemia according to the presence or absence of bone metastasis, using a new sensitive PTHrP(109-141) radioimmunoassay system. The se...
متن کاملHumoral hypercalcemia of malignancy in female F344 rats implanted with a transplantable rat pulmonary carcinoma line (IP).
A transplantable rat pulmonary carcinoma line (IP) in F344 rats is a useful animal model for humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy (HHM). The present study analyzed the degree of HHM by implanting IP into F344 female rats aged 6, 20 or 45 weeks. IP-bearing females developed elevated plasma parathyroid hormone-related protein levels, hypercalcemia and increased osteoclastic activity as well as cal...
متن کاملDiagnostic approach to hypercalcemia
It is usually not difficult to differentiate between them. Malignancy is often evident clinically by the time it causes hypercalcemia, and patients with hypercalcemia of malignancy usually have higher calcium concentrations and are more symptomatic from hypercalcemia than individuals with primary hyperparathyroidism. Although hypercalcemia in otherwise healthy outpatients is usually due to prim...
متن کاملParathyroid Hormone Related Peptide (PTHrP): A Mini-Review
In most clinical situations hypercalcemia is caused by primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP) or malignancy [1,2]. Because the excretion of urinary cAMP (cyclic 3’,5’ adenosine monophosphate) has been proved to be a good measurement of the biological activity of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in PHP some investigators started measuring urinary cAMP excretion in hypercalcemic patients with a malignant tum...
